Changes to Roller Brake Testing

The Big Change on Roller Brake Testing: What It Was All About

In April 2025, major changes came into effect regarding HGV roller brake testing (RBT) inspections, as introduced by the UK Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA). These changes require that all brake performance evaluations be carried out using either:

  • Laden Roller Brake Tests (RBTs) – vehicles must be tested while loaded to at least 65% of their maximum gross weight.

  • Electronic Brake Performance Monitoring Systems (EBPMS) – systems that track brake performance in real time, based on actual operating conditions.

In a move to improve road safety and the accuracy of brake testing, failure to comply may result in sanctions, failed inspections, or even legal action against fleet operators and workshops.

Step 1: Understanding the Need for Laden Roller Brake Testing

Previously, many HGV brake tests were conducted unladen. From April 2025 onwards, RBTs have been required to be conducted with the vehicle loaded to at least 65% of its maximum weight. This change has led to:

🔹 More accurate brake force calculations
🔹 More consistent and reliable test results
🔹 Improved safety and compliance across the fleet

How Autocheck Helps

Autocheck’s digital system ensures all RBT requirements are tracked and helps schedule reminders for vehicles due for a laden brake test. While brake testing equipment cannot connect directly with any digital system, Autocheck allows users to upload each test as a PDF document or image, which is then permanently linked to the vehicle and job record—supporting full traceability over time.

Step 2: Understanding Electronic Brake Performance Monitoring Systems

EBPMS continuously monitors braking performance while the vehicle is in operation. Among its benefits:

🔹 Ongoing compliance monitoring
🔹 Early identification of braking issues
🔹 Reduced reliance on frequent RBTs

How Autocheck Helps

Although EBPMS cannot yet integrate directly with any digital inspection platform, Autocheck allows all brake test documents to be uploaded and managed in one central location. It also provides real-time analytics on inspections and maintenance schedules—helping users make informed, proactive decisions.

Step 3: Let Autocheck Take Control of Your Compliance

Remaining compliant doesn’t have to be a challenge. Autocheck simplifies workshop and fleet inspections by automating key processes:

Digital scheduling – never miss a laden RBT or scheduled service
Automated reports – generate DVSA-compliant digital records effortlessly
Secure document storage – upload and attach brake test PDFs to vehicle records for easy access
Cloud-based record keeping – access every inspection record, any time, from anywhere
